FROM THE PRESIDENT
Once again, thanks for the wonderful turn out at the June meeting. With Summer upon us, I hope everyone is handling the heat as well as expected.
We really had a busy month in June with TWO trips to the Lizard/Monticello, MS, the great return trip to Mobile, AL with the shopping, lunch at Felix’s, and the late night entertainment at The Blue Gill by club member, Rain Jaudon, our monthly cruise in at Edgewater Mall (1st Saturday of each month), and having the boys over to my place while the Vetter Halves held their meeting at the Harrington’s house in Ocean Springs. I can’t tell you how much it means to me as President of this Corvette Club, to see such a large number of you attending these events. It’s an amazing feeling I get from you guys and gals. Thanks for your support!
Please note our Trip to Vicksburg, MS this weekend (July 7-9, 2006). Details have been going out in bi-weekly emails and we look forward to a fun filled trip.
We will also join the Greater New Orleans Corvette Club for a Day at the Races. July 15th, join the caravan at Exit 50, Ocean Springs, MS Park n Ride at 10:30 am. Details have gone out via email and of course, will go out again next week.
Take me out to the Ballgame! July 28th – Friday. Leave Ocean Springs, MS 5:00pm on the way to Mobile, AL. Game time 7:00pm . Eating TBA. Join us for a game between the Mobile Bay Bears vs Mississippi Braves. RSVP please: rain@rainontheinternet.com
(10$ per ticket)
July 30th – Vetter Halves Meeting. Sunday. 2:00pm at Bob & Becky Turner’s House. Directions and reminders will go out in future emails as that date draws near.
I again asked everyone to please make their reservations for Vettes at the Village in Sandestin, FL on August 12th. Details have been sent via email and will be on the web site next week. Space is limited for this WONDERFUL car show!
Please contact Rain Jaudon (VATV Liaison) about picking up a pack or three of Door Prize Tickets . The more cars we bring and the more tickets we sell, the more money that comes back into our club from this event.
I want to thank everyone again for their support and cooperation at our meetings. Alas, these are scheduled club business meetings. I am requesting your up-most attention and that cellphone and pagers be turned off or set to vibrate. (please take calls outside if you must answer it) Club members are having trouble hearing over the “chit chat” so please keep idle talk and comments to a minimum. There is plenty of time before and after the meeting for visiting. Perhaps we will try using a PA System at the next meeting in order to overpower the “Chatty” ones ! J
At last month’s meeting I asked the club to make suggestions on how to improve the Mississippi Gulf Coast Corvette Club. If anyone has recommendations for guest speakers, slide presentations, demonstrations, etc please do not hesitate to pass that info on to me. This is YOUR Corvette Club – don’t hesitate to offer up ideas, destinations, events, and such. We love to drive and show our cars off and the fellowship is an added bonus!
Till then, Save the Wave!
Robert Kline
MEETING MINUTES
29 June 2006
We had 36 members attend the June meeting, which is a nice turnout.
It was reported that one of our members, Jim Harrington, will have triple bypass surgery, some time this month, at one of the hospitals in Mobile, AL. Our thoughts and prayers will be with you, Jim.
The Club Directory, that has been in work for some time, was passed around to all present for review and corrections as necessary. Those of you who were not in attendance, please contact our VP, Jada Cooper, and verify that the information the Club has is accurate.
Darrell Hill discussed Cruisin’ the Coast (CTC). At present, there are 3900 registered cars, 3800 of which are cars that were registered for the 2005 CTC. It is hoped that all previously registered cars show up. Thirteen Car Clubs will share in the revenue accumulated during CTC. It is hoped that our income will be the same as usual. It is encouraging to note that sufficient Club members have signed up to work the Car Corral during the week. Darrell also said that the Corvette Rendezvous is not a dead issue as yet. The parking lot at Long Beach High School has been repaved (this is the staging area for the parade, for which our Club has the primary responsibility).
Deanna Suber was asked to look into the possibility of acquiring some lighter-weight Club shirts. Some folks feel like our present Club shirts are too hot for this time of year.
Ken Klein demonstrated the new “Corvette Wave”. Those of you who weren’t at the meeting, please ask Ken to give a demonstration the next time you see him.
Several members gave reports on past events – Tail of the Lizard 1 & 2, the cruise to Felix’s, etc.
The Suber’s modified “84 Vette is now on display at the National Corvette Museum.
The Club’s By-Laws were presented, voted on, and accepted. Yea!!! It was reiterated that the by-laws is a living document. It can be modified at any time with the consent of a majority of Club member’s voting to do so.
Robert discussed the details of this coming weekend’s trip to Vicksburg.
Rain discussed “Vettes in the Village” at Destin. He also passed out some brochures and will put additional info up on the Club’s website.
At this point, the meeting more or less disintegrated into a series of individual discussions, with much talking and laughing. Great fellowship abounded. It’s a shame more of our members weren’t there to enjoy the good time.

Wanda and I came from very...make that extremely...austere beginnings.
Austere--definition---we wuz pore folks.
Because of that, we had big dreams. Included in those dreams were nice, sporty cars. Our realistic goals were for sporty hardtops or convertibles. Corvettes were so far out that they didn't even fit into the dream.
When Wanda and I got married in 1961, she owned a 1954 Chevy Belair 2-dr hardtop, red w/red and white interior, factory sunvisor and factory faux continental kit. I had to sell my 55 Ford yellow and black Sunliner convertible. She claims 'til this day that I married her for her car. I'm not saying.
We worked hard over the years. At one time, I had two parttime jobs and was going to night college four nights a week so we could manage to have some nice cars...and we did, but couldn't afford a Vette. In the mid 70s we were stationed in northern Japan. We developed a friendship with a Navy officer who owned a red 73 Vette Convertible. I talked him into selling it to me in July 1976 at a rather decent price. Wanda and I had now achieved the epitomé of our car dreams.
Dreams cost money. That means that dreams can be bought...at a price. That car was the only Corvette in northern Japan at that time. It was in high demand as a parade car. We used it to haul several dignitaries in parades including a homecoming parade for a Sumo champion. They paid me quite well to haul him about 3/4 of a mile through his hometown. :)
As a result of that exposure, a Japanese car dealer convinced me that he wanted to own the car much, much more than I did...and he had the money to prove it. Wanda cried. I promised to buy her a replacement as soon as we returned to the states.
We returned to the states (Biloxi) in July 78. Later that year, I bought her a 77 red coupe. That made her feel better, but not me. She seldom would let me drive it.
By 1981, I had had enough. I managed to trade for a nearly new red 1980 Vette that I had seen on the dealership showroom when it was new. It was one of my favorite Vettes.
When I retired from the Air Force in 1984, I went to work for a Chevy dealer in San Antonio. In March 1985, we bought our first new Corvette...a red 1985 coupe. That same month, I bought Wanda a 1978 Special Anniversay to replace the 77 that was stolen. I told her what I had bought and she said "I don't like gray and silver, I want red." I couldn't convince her that a Special Anniversary was worth quite a bit more. She said, "I don't care, I want red." So, I painted it red and added the pace car spoilers. SHE still has that car today.
As time went by, we bought a new 86, 91, 94 and 95 Vettes. Each one of those has a story all it's own, but space doesn't permit each one.
When we both retired in 2000, the 95 was sold, but you can betcher butt that Wanda wasn't giving up HER 78.
My favorites were the 80, 86 and 95. Wanda says her favorites were the
73, 78, 86 and 95.
